Why become an adult member?

Maybe you've been volunteering at your child's scout unit, or perhaps you were a Scout or Guide as a child and now want to pass on your skills.

Adult members are essential for Scouting to operate. Without them there would be no Scouting!

You don't need special skills to become an adult member in Scouting - just your time, enthusiasm, a desire to support young people, and a willingness to learn.

Read on to learn how to sign up as an adult member.

NB. This procedure applies to those who have never been members of Scouting. If you have been a member of any branch of the Scouts Association of Australia, NSW in the past, you may have to join via an alternative process. Contact our Group Leader Sarah H. for more information.

Achievement pathways

Once initial training is completed, there are other opportunities for Adults in Scouting.

Leaders are encouraged to complete the Advanced Leadership or Wood Badge training within a year of their initial appointment. The Wood Badge program allows Leaders to advance their Leadership skills through an online training program, a weekend residential course, and a project, supported by a mentor.

Adult members can also advance their Adventurous Activity skills, from initial Safe Participant qualifications to becoming an Adventurous Activity guide. Some of these qualifications are the minimum credentials required to run verify youth competency in skills for Outdoor Adventure Skill stage progressions, and run adventurous activities such as Paddling (canoeing, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding) and Vertical (rock climbing, abseiling, canyoning), among others.
