Scouts NSW - 2nd Sutherland (Armco) Scout Group

Kit and Equipment

What's in your kit?

At a minimum, as part of your standard kit and at every activity you will need:

  • A refillable water bottle.
  • Covered shoes - open shoes such as sandals, thongs and crocs are not allowed at Scouting activities, per Scouts NSW policy.
  • A sun hat (wide-brimmed or bucket hat) during the day.

Kit for Cubs and older

  • Head torch
  • Personal first aid kit
    • Make and get to know the contents of your own kit as part of your bushcraft skills and carry it on every adventurous activity
  • Mess kit - for when we share meals on camps and day activities. The ideal mess kit is a drawstring bag containing
    • a non-breakable plate
    • a non-breakable bowl
    • a non-breakable cup
    • cutlery
    • pegs
    • 2 x tea-towels.
  • Day pack / small backpack to carry all your gear in on adventures
  • Comfortable, supportive walking shoes. You can use shoes you already own, such as
    • school shoes
    • runners with good grip
  • Water shoes or other shoes that can get wet, required as part of Scouts NSW policy and without exception for water activities such as:
    • canoeing
    • visiting the beach
    • swimming in any body of water that isn't a patrolled, chlorinated pool.

At this age, you won't need to buy a sleeping bag if you don't already have one. It's ok to borrow a bag from friends or family instead.

As you become a more experienced Scout, we recommend you acquire other clothing and equipment for personal use (put your name on everything!).
