Grey Wolf Award

The Grey Wolf Award

This award is the peak award for the Cub Scout section. Only a few Cub Scouts will achieve the Grey Wolf Award, but any Cub who wants to challenge themselves may attempt it.

Many of the requirements are completed as part of normal Cub unit activities. An outline of the requirements are below.

Milestones

Complete at least Milestone 3 (usually starting at age 10):

  • Lead four activities
  • Assist in two (in at least two different challenge areas) activities
  • Participate in four activities from each of the four challenge areas.

Special Interest projects

Complete six projects, of at least four hours' duration (including Plan> Do> Review>), in at least two of the six Special Interest Areas:

  • Adventure & Sport
  • Arts & Literature
  • Creating a Better World
  • Environment
  • Growth & Development
  • STEM & Innovation

At least two projects must have individual and personalised goals. The remaining may be group projects with collaborative goals, completed as a unit or patrol.

Note - the goals of the projects do not have to be successful for the projects to be complete!

Adventurous Journey

Plan and lead an Adventurous Journey of four hours' duration. This may be a bushwalk (although if it is the same bushwalk you need to achieve the Bushwalking 3 stage progression, it must be six hours' duration). It could also be any human-powered adventure, such as leading a journey on bicycles, or paddling in canoes.

A maximum of two Cub Scouts may plan and lead the journey together.

At the conclusion of your journey, review it with your project patrol and make a brief report to your Unit Council.

Outdoor Adventurous Skills

Achieve Stage 3 in all three core areas - Bushcraft, Bushwalking and Camping.

The table below lists some of the skills across all three areas.

Bushcraft
  • Recognise and protect flora and fauna in your environment
  • Learn and understand weather forecasts and patterns
  • Learn and practice first aid and basic survival skills
  • Learn the care and use of ropes and use at least three knots in a Scouting activity
  • Cook a meal for yourself in a campfire
Bushwalking
  • Use navigation skills, including how to read a map, with and without a compass
  • Care for yourself and others during a bushwalk
  • Choose appropriate clothing and pack your own bag for a bushwalk
  • Identify and understand risks and hazards for a bushwalk
  • Teach a less experienced Scout how to stay safe and pack a bag for a bushwalk
  • Participate in at least two bushwalks, at least one of 6 hours duration
Camping
  • Cook a meal for your patrol at camp using a gas fire
  • Erect a tent independently
  • Identify and select an appropriate campsite
  • Plan a menu for a camp
  • Run an activity at camp
  • Build an emergency shelter using found items and sleep in it overnight
  • Teach a less experienced Scout how to pack a bag for camp
  • Spend at least five nights under canvas on Scouting activities
You must have progressed eight stages overall in any of the Outdoor Adventure Skills during your time in Cub Scouts (or since achieving the Joey Scout Challenge Award). These can include the stage progressions you have achieved in the Core areas.

Personal Development Course

Participate in a one day Personal Development or Unit Management course.

Personal Reflection

Reflect on all you have learned and experienced on your pathway to the Grey Wolf Award, and make a record of it in a way that is meaningful to you and to your Unit Council. Suggestions for how you could do this include (but are not limited to):

  • a speech or presentation
  • a narrative story or graphic novel
  • a photographic collage
  • a video or audio recording
  • a song or epic poem
